CopenHill is a modern energy plant that burns the waste produced by the residents of Copenhagen to generate both electricity and heat. This approach allows partial recycling of municipal waste, significantly reducing the amount that ends up in landfills. Also, the heat produced is used for heating homes in the city. CopenHill therefore contributes to Copenhagen’s transition to a sustainable and carbon-neutral energy system.
At the same time, on the roof of the factory there is a ski slope with a synthetic surface of 9,000 square meters and 500 meters long, with the capacity to accommodate 10,000 skiers daily. Thus, winter sports lovers can practice skiing at any time, regardless of the season.
Another attraction is the 85-meter-high climbing wall, which is the highest artificial climbing wall in the world. Suitable for experienced climbers and beginners alike, this vertical challenge tests your skills and offers a unique perspective of the city.
Another outdoor sporting facility is mountain running on the “CopenHill Track”, a track with an incline between 5% and 35%, where competitions are organized regularly.
The leisure area accessible to the public is complemented by a café, a restaurant, music, and a classic après-ski atmosphere.
All these recreational facilities help promote an active and healthy life within the city.
By integrating a modern power plant with outdoor urban entertainment options, CopenHill manages to provide useful services to the local community, as well as attract tourists from around the world. The project is an eloquent example of Copenhagen’s creative vision and commitment to sustainable urban development.
CopenHill has been named World Building of the Year 2021 at the fourteenth annual Festival of World Architecture.
